Expats' exodus as Brits give up on north Cyprus

In some cases, Britons that could not sell their homes have simply locked them up and left.

BRITISH expatriates are leaving the north of Cyprus in record numbers according to reports in the Turkish Cypriot media.

Economic difficulties, bureaucratic obstacles, poor utilities, animal welfare and increasing electricity prices are cited as the main reasons for the exodus of British retirees.

Kibris reports a surge in homes put on sales by expatriates, most bemoaning that they are fed up with being ignored by the administration with “endless pointless bureaucracy.”

Chubby Cevdet, the owner of a restaurant popular with British residents said: “Life for Brits living here can be challenging, no one listens to them,” he said.

“The British Pound was hard hit ... They want to escape. There are always problems with electricity and water, but they can never get these problems solved,” he added.

The recession has left some Brits trapped because their foreign property has lost value at the same time as their British savings have become worth less abroad.

Bit like other countries then! .......Spain, France SCyp , even here in GB its not all roses, nobody listens to you now re government .... Try and get things done is like asking for a slice of the 'moon'... and very expensive if you can get work/repairs done .

Utilities in GB are very expensive not just NC! ... Think a lot of expats returning will be quite shocked at how in a few years things have changed ... Try for a Dr appointment, you have to press 1, then 4 , then 6 or 7 , then sorry our lines are too busy, try later ! then when you do get through, its a three week wait !!

So all the best to the ones trying to return to a nation of press buttons ... :)

I agree not the same everywhere in UK, walked into GP at 12 noon, got an appointment at 1640 the same day, perhaps a change of GP. Needed to see consultant re angiograme, two week wait. I don't live in an affluent area just outside Birmingham in the Black Country.

Think its the practice we are with here in Okehampton! pretty dire, all the staff leave because of the pressure, I have been waiting for a 24 hour heart monitor for three months and enquiring why its taken so long, told only one in use as the other is broken down and waiting for funds to repair!

Im not the only person around to be fed up with the appointment system, its quite common place here in the west country, only getting worse ..

Plus it rains every day, and the supermarkets are sooo big, and council tax is so huge and ... moan moan moan .. lol :D

Cant wait to go back to the sun of NC, and the peace and quiet .. :D
